The Steam Direct publishing fee will be set at $100

Earlier this year, Valve made the decision to replace Steam Greenlight with a new way of self-publishing games called Steam Direct, Valve revealed it will charge a publishing fee.  Back in February, the fee had not been announced yet and most publishers were worried they would be forced to pay an exorbitant fee. We now have news about the fee as earlier in a blog post, Valve revealed that Steam Direct is set at $100 (R1,300).

Valve decided they’re going to aim for the lowest barrier to developers as possible, with a $100 recoupable publishing fee per game.

Why only $100?

Back in February when Steam Direct was announced, Valve hadn’t decided how much developers would need to pay to publish their games. Valve has stated that they wanted it to be as small as possible as to not burden starting game developers. Valve also said the fee would prevent people looking to abuse their publishing system.

Valve was initially thinking of a fee around the $500 ( R 6,500) mark, but through the various community discussions from discussing the pros and cons of whether there should be an amount, what that amount should be, ways that recouping could work, which developers would be helped or hindered, predictions for how the store would be affected. Ultimately Valve has decided they’re going to aim for the lowest barrier to developers as possible, with a $100 (R 1,300) recoupable publishing fee per game.

What Next For Steam Direct

Valve and Steam aiming for the low publishing fee gives every game developer a chance to get their game in front of players and potential partners.  Valve also stated that they will update The Store algorithm so it can make sure you see games that are worth your time and the types of games you most like to play.

Valve and Steam will update the community on the official release of Steam Direct soon.
