REVIEW NOTE: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD
NBA 2K18 is one of the most anticipated sports games of the year. This iteration of the NBA2K franchise has most of the features fans were asking for in the forums and throughout the NBA 2K17 season. NBA 2K18 was enhanced and reworked to make it more authentic and is true to the experience of a basketball game than ever before. The Pre-Game Show with Shaquille O’Neal, Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith has been revamped with more realistic animations making it feel like the real deal.
Realistic NBA experience and mechanics
In most sports games, players want the most authentic in-game experience and NBA 2K18 does that very well with the commentary done by Kevin Harlan and his co-commentators that feels more natural than what you find in other sports titles. This year, the Pre-Game Show is even better and Shaquille O’Neal, Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith look, sound and act more natural when it comes to generating the atmosphere of a real basketball game. Apart from that, there’s the national anthem playing before games and more pre-game animations that make NBA 2K18 the closest thing to a real game of NBA basketball even before a match starts. Another improved feature is the shot meter, NBA 2K18’s meter is now even more sensitive and requires more effort to master.
My Neighborhood is great
The biggest addition to this year’s game is The Neighborhood. The MyCareer mode is now an open-world, MMO experience that combines Pro-Am, MyPark, character customisation and some new elements that were not in the previous 2K titles. In the MyPLAYER mode, you’ll be moving around My Neighborhood, which allows you to truly experience the life of an NBA player, also off the court, like during in-store appearances and interactions with your fans. You’ll be allowed to practice basketball drills in the team arena, which was already available in the earlier modes, but not in such a physical, realistic way, involving walking into the arena or players practicing on other courts.
GRAPHICS & PRESENTATION
Realistic graphical representation of the NBA
Overall the visuals are great, the presentation of the teams and the players are on par and the user experience is fast and smoother than in previous titles. In NBA 2K18 there are more sideline interviews, more NBA Wired-like moments involving the coaches and there’s also more on-court sounds that really immerse you in the world of an NBA player and team. 2K also have tried their best in making the Online matches run as smoothly as the Offline matches, online connectivity is needed especially with Neighborhood mode, even though it isn’t perfect you can still have an authentic NBA experience.
Sports game of the year contender
NBA 2K18 already trumps 2K17 with its improved modes and pre and post presentations. It is by no means perfect as the development team will need to work on, including some of the presentations could be changed or improved a little in MyGM, MyLeague, and MyTeam. We belive this is definitely a must-have game of 2017 and contender for Sports game of the year 2017.
